The Gili Islands are not just beaches and bicycles…Here’s a list of 12 things that you can and should tick off of your travel bucket list when visiting our little paradise islands.
Everybody knows that the snorkel and dive spots around The Gilis are beautiful and diverse. This alone is the sole reason that many tourists visit the island. You can spot hundreds of different species including The Green Sea Turtle, Clown Fish, Black Tip and White Tip Reef Sharks etc.
The Gili Islands are a fantastic place to start diving and snorkelling.
The Islands are very small in circumference. You can walk around each one in a matter of hours. Each Island is very different from the next but they all boast stunning landscapes and ocean views. Therefore,
during your time on the Islands, try to complete a lap around the circumference of each one.
You can do this by foot or by bicycle.
If you didn’t get a photo on a swing in the ocean, did you even go to the Gili Islands?
We can thank Instagram for the hype around these swing photos because nothing says, “I’m a cool, travel hipster” better than a pic of you pretending to watch the sunset while you pose with your back to the camera. To be fair, they do make for some great travel snaps.
If posing isn’t your style… it’s equally as fun to watch people attempt to get the perfect shot.
It’s polite to learn some basic words of the native language in any country that you visit around the world. In Indonesia, there are more than 300 hundred different native languages spoken. However, Bahasa Indonesia is the official language.
During your time in Gili, have a go at learning some basic Indonesian and practice with some of the local people. They will appreciate your efforts.
For one night at least, forget all your troubles and PAR-TAY! There’s awesome parties on the islands (Gili Trawangan & Gili Air). It doesn’t matter if you drink or not, just let go for a moment and dance under
the stars. If you’re lucky enough to spot a shooting star, don’t forget to make a wish!
Indonesian food is absolutely delish! There’s so many options to choose from whether you’re a meat eater or vegetarian/vegan. Don’t be boring and just eat the western dishes that you’re used to… We highly recommend that while you’re in Gili, go and try some local cuisine and immerse yourself in the variety of spices and flavours on offer.
Top tip: The local warungs and the night market in Gili Trawagan are great places to start.
Let’s face it, it’s always a good time to try and reduce your carbon footprint. Using less plastic and not spending too long in the shower is a given. But how about getting involved in a weekly beach clean-up?
Help keep the Gili’s beautiful and pick up some trash during your time on the Islands. Our island community is awesome and have created regular ‘Beach Clean Ups’ around the 3 Islands. This is also a great way to meet like-minded people! Call into any of the dive shops for more information.
You can even take part in underwater clean ups too. Just ask in one of the many dive shops around the islands to find out when and how you can take part in these events.
A vodka shot + a sachet of yellow powder (Joss) = This is a Gili favourite!
The vodka joss is sometimes used as an initiation process for Gili newcomers. It’s fizzy and it’s fun. Everyone should give this one a go!
Outdoor cinemas are getting more common all over the world but here in the Gilis, we only have outdoor cinemas… and they’re on the beach. Beanbags on the sand, a cool evening breeze and a movie on the big screen. It’s cosy and we love it!
We all know that the sunsets are amazing but don’t forget about sunrise. Whether you stay up all night partying or wake up fresh after an early night…don’t miss this!
The islands are very quiet at this time of the morning so you don’t need to worry about fighting against the crowds for a good seat. The sun rises over Mount Rinjani in Lombok and it is truly magical to see.
There’s no better place to practice meditation and yoga than right here in Gili. Stunning sandy beaches and turquoise waters, there’s no automobiles so you can truly embrace the peace and tranquillity by putting on some lycra and becoming a yogi master!
You don’t need to be a celebrity to live the high life. Charter a yacht with your friends and have one of the most epic experiences in the Gilis. It’s a lot cheaper than you’d think and it’s a great way to spend the day. For more information on yacht charter packages check out our website and email us on: firstname.lastname@example.org
