Choosing where to stay can be really tricky when you’re booking a holiday. In the Gilis it is no different as you are now completely spoilt for choice.
There was a time not so long ago, when the Gili Islands were so remote that your only options were between sleeping in a traditional wooden lumbung or in a beruga on the beach. However, a big increase in tourism over recent years has seen multiple hotels develop and now there is a range of accommodation options for you to choose from.
We have broken down the accommodation options into 4 simple categories and given some top tips to help you choose the best place for you to stay during your trip!
Top choice for solo travelers & budget travelers
If you love meeting people and you’re traveling cheap, there really is no better option for you. The hostels in Gili are cheap, unique and creative. They will usually have private rooms as well as shared dorm rooms. People will hang out and socialize in the communal areas, which is great if you’re traveling alone and want to make some friends.
Top choice for luxury travelers + families
They’re big, they’re fancy and the service is on point. We’re talking swimming pools, bath tubs, free toiletries, a mini bar, and excellent service. The rooms all look the same and are very clean and comfortable.
Hotels are still great places to socialize and meet other holiday makers while sipping on a cocktail around the pool
Top choice for a ‘flashpacker’
You’re traveling with a backpack, but you like to spend a little extra for comfort and privacy. Flashpackers are simply world travelers with a bigger budget and local owned bungalows/homestays are the perfect choice for these guys.
Your own room and bathroom, this style of accommodation is comfortable and homely but typically not as luxurious or expensive as a hotel. It is also a great way to meet and spend time with local people as they will normally live in a house based at the accommodation with their own family.
Top choice for honeymooners, big groups & celebrities
Yes, this is by far the most luxurious and expensive style of accommodation but boy oh boy is it worth it!
The luxury private villas will normally provide you with your own pool, garden, kitchen area, breakfast delivered to your door and top notch service. This is a very private way to spend your stay and is perfect if you’re looking to really unwind and escape from reality.
First things first, what is your budget? Your budget is the number 1 thing to consider but if money isn’t a concern, then here are some other things to consider when making your decision:
Are you traveling for work or leisure?
If you’re a digital nomad and still have work to do, then it’s probably best to stay somewhere a bit quieter.
Which location of the Island would you like to stay on?
Staying close to the harbour or the nightlife areas is going to be busier and less peaceful.
How long are you staying?
Perhaps if it’s just a brief stay it’s good to stay close to the harbour so that you don’t have far to travel and can spend more time adventuring!
What facilities do you need?
If you want a strong WIFI connection and a hairdryer in your room then a hostel isn’t for you. What do you consider a necessity? Consider this when making your decision.
Are you planning to spend a lot of time in your room/at the accommodation?
If you are just looking for a break from life and don’t
want to spend too much time exploring, choosing an accommodation with a swimming pool is probably a good idea.
Are you traveling with children?
Check whether the place you’re staying is child friendly if you have little ones.
